The mentalist vs psych. Monk and Psych had some real moments of pathos especially Monk but they were comedies. I was looking to watch the newest episode of Dexter because Showtime told me I could be warned it lied and I saw a trailer for a new TV show called The Mentalist. I was only using clips from the 1st episodes for the most part and the Mentalist didnt really have that much with Lisbon other than her being an annoyed boss for the most part.
I cant find the trailer I saw but it went a lot like this. From 2008-2014 there were two shows that both fit the bill. Meanwhile The Mentalist used the same premise of a poseur-psychic who relied on the powers of observation to.
Mentalist had some humor but it was definitely a drama. The Mentalist might have funny moments but its still on considered under the genre of drama. Shawns father is a retired police detective Corbin Bernson who taught Shawn everything he knows about the powers of observation.

The Mentalist has been more successful while Psych has been on longer. Not that Im inferring The Mentalist is a blatant ripoff of Psych or anything. My daughter has been watching a Psych marathon on USA all day.
Its about a guy with the uncanny ability to notice the smallest details allowing him to solve crimes no one else can. Some very generic differences are that The Mentalist will take you a lot of time to complete as compared to Psych and also the plot of Psych contains more humor than The Mentalist. Apparently the main character on Psych Spenser likes to mention The Mentalist quite often in passing.
The Wade Foyett vs Hutch storyline on Criminal Minds was much more believable So far the characterisations on Psych are a bit excessive but necessary to get the ball rolling I suppose. You just cant beat the personalities of Shawn and Gus and the way they are together. However Psych was a comedy so only they could get away with making fun of the other show directly.

I enjoy the Mentalist and all its characters but find the Red John premise a bit much with all its rather far-fetched premises and intrigues. It ambled along fine with effective B-list supporting character actors minimal budget and an audience that was loyal and large enough by USAs standards. Personally Im a much bigger fan of Psych than The Mentalist Psych is so much fun to watch--with its crisp writing original premise and hilarious duo of Shawn and Gus--Im surprised there arent more knock-offs.
Those are two very different kind of shows. I really want to catch the Mentalist but havent gotten to it. You know I have yet to see the Mentalist but I think thats totally hilarious.
